Using Object Tags in specter (E.g. Create Zones)

Here you'll learn how to attach additional information to building components using object labels – organized in groups – to map deliveries, inspections, cycle sections, or individual areas.

In this article you will learn:

  • How to create object labels and assign them to components

  • How to create and manage label groups

  • How to edit, color, or delete object labels

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Assigning Object Labels

Object labels allow you to individually tag components or areas – independently of the existing object hierarchy.

Typical use cases:

  • Differentiating deliveries (e.g. precast delivery for shell construction / fit-out)

  • Inspections or sign-offs by the structural engineer

  • Defining cycle sections

  • Restrictions or special requirements

How to assign a label:

  1. Click on any component in the model.

  2. Right-click → Manage labels.

  3. Enter a new label and choose which group it belongs to – or create a new group directly.

  4. Click Add. The label is now linked to the component.

The same process applies to entire areas as well.

2. Creating and Managing Label Groups

Object labels are organized in groups. A group brings together thematically related labels (e.g. the group Deliverieswith the labels Precast Delivery – Shell and Precast Delivery – Fit-out).

Creating groups via right-click:

When assigning a label, you can name a new group directly from the right-click menu and assign the label to it immediately.

Creating groups via the group management (recommended):

For a better overview, use the Group Management:

  1. Right-click on a component → Manage labelsManage groups.

  2. Here you can see all existing groups and their labels.

  3. Click Add new group, give it a name, and add the relevant labels directly.

  4. Additional labels within a group can be added at any time using the plus icon.

  5. Changes are saved automatically.

3. Editing and Deleting Labels

In the Group Management, you have the following options for each label:

Action

Description

Edit (pencil icon)

Select the color of the label

Delete

Remove the label from the group

Once created, labels and groups are available for selection on all components when you open Manage labels.

To remove a label from a component: Open Manage labels on the component and uncheck the relevant label.

4. Filtering by Object Labels

Once components have a label assigned, you can filter views and tasks specifically by those labels.

In the Viewer:

  1. Go to the filter settings below the model.

  2. Click the arrow iconPlus → create a new filter.

  3. Select Object label as the filter type.

  4. Choose the desired group and the specific label (e.g. Deliveries → Precast Delivery – Shell).

  5. The filter is now active and displays only the filtered components.

In the Weekly Preview:

  1. Open the settings of the Weekly Preview.

  2. Enable Object label as a structuring criterion (alongside e.g. building and floor).

  3. Select the desired group and the relevant labels.

  4. The Weekly Preview will now display tasks structured by the selected label.

Example: You are planning a staircase that has been assigned the label Precast Delivery – Shell. In the Weekly Preview, you can see at a glance that a shell construction delivery needs to be scheduled for this component.

5. Object Labels in Work Preparation

Object labels are also useful in work preparation – especially when the model does not contain all the necessary information (e.g. no distinction between precast walls and reinforced concrete walls).

How to use object labels as a differentiation criterion:

  1. Open the specter Work Preparation via the menu.

  2. Go to Object grouping.

  3. Add a new criterion and select Object label as the filter type.

  4. Choose the desired group (e.g. Deliveries → Precast Delivery – Shell).

  5. The work preparation assignment will be structured accordingly.

This allows you to specifically differentiate and assign objects, even when that information is not stored in the model itself.

Summary

Object labels give you a flexible, model-independent way to tag building components. With the new group feature, you can stay organized even with a large number of labels. Labels are available as a filter criterion across all key functions – Viewer, Weekly Preview, and Work Preparation.
